I've had this product just over a week now, and it does what it says on the tin.

It arrived safely packaged, and before the predicted delivery date. From the 500GB there is 480+ memory space to use, plenty (for now). The drive comes with a 2 or 3 pin option for power plug in, both attatchments work fine, although i have tried the 2 pin plug in, i dont think i will need ever really need it, that said its a good idea.

The product sits nicely on the desk, it doesnt take up much space and impressivly is very quiet when its running.



Overall, very impressed.

the drive never worked properly for me - had trouble copying and ended up not being seen by the computer. That said Amazon sorted it out with no trouble at all - I think sometimes these sorts of drive are a bit pot luck. I wasn't lucky. Went back to Western Digital drives (which I have already used) and worked nicely straight out of the box.

This device comes preformatted for NTFS, bit is easy to reformat for another operating system (Linux in my case). It's supplied with a universal power supply with adaptors for both UK and European operation. Obviously the USB cable is also supplied.



I've been using it pretty much continuosly for 3 weeks and found it's very quiet and reliable.



I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to add a decent amount of storage to their system.

Bought to replace a faulty C: drive (also WD and failed after 18months, thus confidence not high but does exactly what I need). Installation is simple, operation is reasonably quiet.



A note on the faulty drive - it works for 20mins if wrapped in a freezer bag with ice, just long enough to recover my data! But, RMA with WD requires you to pay shipping costs, not obvious from their website.



A note on Amazon, failed to deliver next day as paid for, but have been prompt to refund delivery charges.

Mine arrived extremely well packaged, protective foam everywhere, external box stuffed with extra paper to stop it moving around. Installed in a newly-built rig, installed Windows 7: no problem. It's very quiet compared to my old Seagate drives & Windows 7 system evaluation programme rated it at 5.9 on a scale of 0-7.9, & declared it more than adequate for a fast gaming pc. No probs so far (2 weeks in). Transfer rates are very fast, but that may be down to the very fast speed of the rest of my components. I like it. It's very good value indeed. Recommended.

I got 5 of these drives to upgrade capacity on overnight backups. One of the drives failed on it's first backup and I can't do anything with it in Windows Disk Management. The drive is visible but reported as unreadable. It has no drive letter and Windows isn't allowing me to do anything with it, like start again as if it was a fresh drive.



Due to the fact that data was written to the drive before it failed I'm reluctant to return it for a refund so I'm going to write it off and buy another. I've replaced dozens of hard drives over the years and this is the first one that failed on first use.



One of the other drives completed a backup but lost it's drive letter afterwards, so I had to reallocate - seems OK now.



We use these drives in a removeable caddy system called Idealstor. It's always possible that something else caused these problems, not the drives themselves, but prior to the upgrade we were using Seagate 320GB drives with no problems at all (other than we ran out of space and needed bigger drives, hence the upgrade).



I'm going to buy some more drives and I'll try a different brand. If I have trouble with these too I'll post a revision to this review but right now the experience hasn't been good.



UPDATE



Had no more problems with the 4 good drives, but the one that died after one backup doesn't look recoverable. I've checked reviews for other brands, hoping they would be slightly better, but they all have a similar story. Mostly happy users with the occasional problem. Seagate and Hitachi don't fare any better, at least on these larger capacity SATA drives, but I'll probably buy Seagate as I ran 10 of them in 2 different backup sets and they all worked perfectly straight out of the box and in service. I've notched the review up by one star on the basis that the 4 good drives seem OK.

Great drive, I use it HARD and have had NO hickups. It's fast quiet and reliable. There is often opperater error or lack of knowalage when components are involved. As I said I push this drive pretty hard and have no complaints. At £38 I think I'll get another one.

I bought the Seagate Hard drive to replace a dodgy Western Digital drive in my DELL PC. The Seagate drive installed perfectly and has performed well to date. I bought a second Seagate drive to mirror all my files/folders and programmes and this is hooked up externally from the PC and just slotted into the PC as back-ups are carried out. You never know with a hard drive if they are going to be reliable or not, but the Seagate looks to be a reliable unit - given that 2 out of 2 working O.K. is a 100% success rate.

It's in a Gigabyte motherboard, with Ssta I connectors - Win.XP. It was easy to set up using Disk Management.(Right click on 'My Computer' and, under 'Storage' click 'Disk Management') Follow the easy instructions and you will be initialized,formatted and partitioned very quickly,at least that was my experience with an AMD Dual Core processor. My new drive, partitioned, shows as: New Volume F: 244GB, NV G:114GB and NV H:107GB.

Stay well away from these drives. They have a major firmware bug that will set the drive to busy, and lock you out. No PC's BIOS will not be able to see the drive. You will lose your data and get a refurbed drive back from Seagate that may well do the same again.



There are loads of stories about this all over the web, even on Seagate's own forums, but they deny there is a problem. I had one of these drive die in six weeks with no warning at all.
