"Seagate is now Maxtor - that should be enough to worry you" 2009-08-18
By Squizzle (Dorset)
It appears I have the same problem reported by others.

Set up in a RAID 1 config - thank God! Drive just vanished after about six months. Passes the Seatools Diagnostic though (Der!) but is not recognised by Windows in any of the 4 sata ports I have, nor in a SATA docking station I bought to check it was not the RAID card at fault.

Seagate were the tops - I had two 250GB IDE's that were fine, having had two faulty Maxtors in succession.

But now Maxtor own Seagate, and it appears to be showing.

Nov 2009 update. The drive had a bug - both replaced by Seagate under warranty with promise that the data will be securely erased. Lets hope so.

But as an update to the Maxtor link - my third Maxtor - built in 2005 has just failed. Maxtor are utter rubbish and I worry for the future of Seagate.

I never write reviews for products but for once I felt the need to....Having always been a seagate user and always been satisfied, I was surprised to read such bad reviews of this 1TB unit.

Eventually I decided to go ahead and buy it and was as happy as ever with what I recieved...performs well and couldn't really hear the unit which is all I expect from a hard drive

I now have plenty of extra storage space and am perfectly happy with my choice of drive

"What drive were u using?" 2009-04-09
By Ray Man
I have got to say that I am very confused by the reviews of this drive. After reading what had been written I chose to buy one of these drives anyway as I have always been a Seagate user and the drive performed as well as I would expect from a Seagate unit...fast, quiet and efficient...what more do you expect from an internal HDD

The 1TB seems to offer me good seek times, good response times and I can barely hear it inside my tower

I will always continue to use seagate!

 "Do Not Buy" 2009-02-28

I can vouch for these other poor reviews. I got mine at the beginning of January and it has already died after less than 2 months. Seems to be the "Busy" problem. It spins up fine, no abnormal sounds, it's just not recognised by the bios anymore.

"avoid avoid avoid - known issues" 2009-01-10
By R. C. Hawkins (London UK)
I have always used Seagate drives for their reliability.

The drive came with a a disc utility cdrom, screws, a data cable and a power cable. Installation was simple enough and the drive was recognised from the first boot up of the machine. Windows with SP3 recognised the whole drive in disk management and it was formatted and had data loading within minutes of installation.

Unfortunately their 1tb and 1.5tb drives have a known problem where the drives freeze in a "busy" mode and the whole pc freezes. This happened to me during boot mode, in dos mode and in windows mode. Go to the seagate forum and search on st31000340as failure and read the 100's of disgruntled customer threads about this same problem.

The problem is quite eratic. Sometimes it works fine for 7 hours before freezing, sometimes it fails several times in 5 minutes. I have had to remove the drive from my pc to get a stable environment again. This drive is on its way back to seagate.
