Decided to upgrade from a recently upgraded Hitachi 320Gb to Seagate's 500Gb using SATA 2 and supposedly quiet drive. Well, the installation went without too much of a hitch, but like some other reviewers, I had to use the clone software three times before successful data transfer. One error message stated that driver was missing. What?. Well, it refers to the chipset which handles large drives in Vista and XP. Get it from VIA website and problems solved.
As to the Seagate, well, this drive is quick, but the stated 3Gbs/sec speed more likely to be in the realms of the conventional 1.5Gbs/sec. Must say though, that in certain non-taxing applications, opening and saving data would appear to be marginally quicker. Now to the alledged silent operation of the Seagate. Well, compared to the Hitachi, this Seagate is noisy..............I mean noisy when the Hitachi is virtually silent but slower. Yes, this Seagate clicks and knocks and whirrs quite audiably. Anyone ever used a Hitachi DeskStar will know how quiet it is. But it is slower by milliseconds. Also recent web searches have revealed a surprising number of Seagate Baracudas failing within a very short service life. So time will tell. That's why I'm only going to award 4 stars. I feel that the Hitachi does a better job as it is silent.

If you are looking for something that you can trust your data with then avoid Seagate brand at all cost, their hard drives is not as good as it used to be and if you get into trouble, they will send you another drive which some else has returned to Seagate. I have had a drive which gone bust , they sent me another which only S.M.A.R.T counter has been reset, the new one in less than a 3 hours , lost 65% of drive health, when I have called Seagate, they say send it to us we will send you another refurbished !!! which god knows what is wrong with that one, after 3 times hard drive exchange, I trough it away and bough a Samsung and God bless them what a performance.

I was so impressed with this drive and ease of installation (including the drive cloning software) that I decided to buy another one just seven days later. Amazon had hiked the price by 40% in the interim!!. I asked customer services to let me know if it was a mistake but only received an A4 sheet of customer services speak. It is not competetive at this new price.

Not much can be said about hard drives, all works reliably. Seagate is a good brand & 5 year limited warranty.
One thing extremely useful was the cloning tool which comes with it - for when you just can't be bothered to install your Operating System again.
It took a few attempts to get it working correctly, but that was for a certain lack of knowledge: - I found I had to change the translation method used to access the hard drive from the default setting "Auto" to "Large" in the BIOS BEFORE I performed the cloning operation else it would not work.
The cloning system works by copying one hard drive (partitions and all) to your new hard drive. (You have to copy all the partitions across, but you can manually adjust their sizes for the new disk, and leave some spare space in case you want to create another partition)
